ABOUT OUR JUNE SPEAKER
According to Alan Pratt, the world’s greatest photographer (well, maybe just Indiana’s or at least Anderson’s, well definitely North Anderson’s-on Broadway) is Nancy Bailey-Pratt. Alan is here biggest supporter in every way as well as the love of her life. (He wouldn’t even put in the parenthesis.) She married him in 1999.
Some may debate the title “Greatest Photographer” but one thing is for sure, Nancy has been at it a long time. She started taking pictures at the age of 8 and has been clicking away ever since. In 1968 she became really serious about it as she invested in her education by attending Rochester Institute of Technology. There she found herself in a man’s profession as she was the only female in a class with 125 guys. She proved her determination by sticking it out. After graduation from RIT….she asked about applying for a photography job at Eli Lilly’s and was told “We do not hire women!!” Now that is a long time ago!!!
Even before graduating from college, Nancy photographed her first wedding in 1970 and now has photographer well over a thousand weddings, including the wedding of the daughter of her first bride and groom. For a few years after graduation, she worked as a Custom Color Printer in a local color lab learning every aspect about printing color photography. Wanting to spend more time on the other side of the camera, Nancy officially opened her first studio in 1977 and a second one in 1986. Nancy is now best known for her Senior Photography although she is highly respected in her area fro Family, Wedding and Children’s Photography as well.
Being a big believer in education, Nancy has attended many of the affiliated schools, taught at at least 4 of them and continually attends seminars and conventions where she can still be found sitting on the front row. Over the years, she has collected over 300 awards on the state and local level, been named Photographer of the Year by PPA, PPI and IPPG several times, featured in the PPA magazine and was one of only 150 photographers around the country to be invited to exhibit in the Hall of Fame’s permanent album collection. She received her Craftsman Degree in 1988 and her Masters in 1989 and was approved by PEC as an affiliated juror in 1990. In 1996, Nancy received the National Award from PPA and PPI.
Having been a member of PPA since 1968, Nancy has been active in photography organizations her entire career in photography. She is presently a member of PPA, PPI, IPPG, ASP and the Daguerre Club and is a past member of SPI and WPPI. She joined IPPG in 1972 and has served 6 times as the President of the club. She joined PPI in 1975 and became President of PPI about 20 years later. Nancy has also served as President of the Daguerre Club of Indiana two times and is currently serving as the Indiana Representative for ASP and is in her 23rd year serving as a councilor for Indiana to PPA.
Presently, Nancy is still operating her Anderson Studio and she is very active in all the organizations. Nancy’s true love is using her camera to record scenes and events of her travels all over the world which she hopes to do a lot more of in the near future.

Detlef grew up in Germany before he moved to the United States in 1997. He met his artisan wife Debra and decided to stay and live with his family in the United States. Detlef started his photographic excursions when he was 12 years old but he only got serious about portrait photography in 2007. He never had a formal education in visual arts or photography and frustration with his photographic results led him to sell his photography equipment multiple times over the years. Left with a point-and-shoot camera he felt something is missing in his life and he returned to a more serious approach to photography, humbled, but even more enthusiastic. Detlef studied the work of great artists such as Bruce Barnbaum, Edward Weston, Man Ray, Robert Maplethorpe, Immogen Cunningham, and Greg Gorman. He established his niche in the world of photography in portraiture and people photography. Photography is a passion and a creative outlet for Detlef. He is not what is commonly referred to as a “professional photographer,” but rather a “photographing professional.” In his day job he is a Director of Engineering, leading and inspiring a large engineering organization at a global Fortune 100 company in the Chicago suburbs. He lives with his wife and son in Carpentersville, Illinois.
